A new report from analyst Peter Misek with Jefferies makes several predictions about Apple’s plans for a rumored TV set. Misek believes that production for the new TV set will begin in May or June, and it will ship in fourth quarter of 2012.
Misek has enough confidence that the new Apple branded TV set is coming that he upped his price target on the stock from $699 to $800. The analyst expects that an Apple television will have a $1,250 average selling price and could have a halo effect that leads to buyers to also purchase other Apple products.
Misek also suggests the Apple television will be dubbed “iPanel” to reflect that it will be more than a television.
“It is a display, gaming center, media hub, computer, home automator, etc.,” said Misek in justifying the iPanel name. “Also, Apple would likely have difficulty getting naming rights from the UK TV network ITV.”
The iPanel name follows the “iP” format of the iPod, iPhone and iPad, but it is clearly just a guess from the analyst. Apple has many names to choose from (iDisplay, iScreen, iPanel, etc.) or they could stick with Apple TV and re-brand the Apple TV set-top box to something like “Apple TV mini.”
