Apple TV 4 may arrive on September 10th

Is Apple planning on releasing Apple TV 4 next week? The company sent out invitations today for a special media event for next week on September 10th. The invitations went out to certain members of the press and reads, “This should brighten everyone’s day”.

There’s no question that the focus of the event is going to be iPhones, but they may also be planning an update to Apple TV as well.

According to Panjiva, a global trade research firm, Apple has received shipments from BYD Precision Manufacture that are described as “Set Top Box with Communication Function”.

The article claims Apple received 3 different shipments from BYD last month in August.

  • The August 25th shipment weighed 16,628 kilograms.
  • The August 18th shipment also weighed 16,628 kilograms.
  • The August 11th shipment weighed 7,044 kilograms.

Previous versions of Apple TV were shipped from Hon Hai labeled as “set top boxes”. Other than the shipping label being titled “Set Top Box with Communication Function”, the weight of the containers and the date of shipments, not much is known about any upcoming updates to Apple TV hardware.

Could the “Communication Function” on the shipping label refer to a much needed replacement of the current Apple TV remote? Perhaps it’s a new way to communicate with the set top box that could be the simplest interface you could ever imagine? As Walter Isaacson quoted Steve Jobs as saying in his biography.

That may be a bit of wishful thinking, but Apple recently updated the Airport Extreme and Time Capsule to support 802.11ac wifi. It would make sense for a device that streams 1080p video content to be able to receive that fastest wireless connection possible. So, at a minimum we expect an Apple TV hardware update to include the ability to receive 802.11ac.

Typically, when we see that Apple is planning to update hardware like Apple TV, inventory for the current model at third-party retailers will dry up. So far, we haven’t seen that or any other hardware leaks. However, we do expect that Apple TV will be updated this year and September 10th is certainly possible.
