As expected Vevo has arrived for Apple TV users, but surprisingly it came along with four other apps as well. This morning Apple rolled out an automatic update for Apple TV that included the Weather Channel, Smithsonian Channel, Disney Channel, Disney XD and Vevo.
To use the Disney apps you must already have a cable subscription that includes the Disney Cannel and it has to be with one of the following cable companies: AT&T U-verse, Charter, Comcast, Cox, Midcontinent Communications, Optimum and Verizon FiOS. Additional cable providers like Time Warner Cable, Dish and DirecTV may be added in the future.
For the other three apps all you need is an internet connection to view streaming content on Apple TV. Vevo has over 75k HD music videos, exclusive originals and live concert performances. The Smithsonian Channel has dozens of educational videos and shows that can be viewed on Apple TV for free. The Weather Channel gives the weather conditions for your area along with video forecasts, on-demand Weather Channel shows and featured stories.
The apps appear automatically without any manual update. However, we did experience a problem with an iPhone recognizing the Apple TV after the update. A simple restart cleared up the issue. To restart your Apple TV go to Settings-> General-> Restart.
Also we are hearing that the DNS trick that allowed non-jailbroken Apple TVs to stream media using Plex through the Trailers app is now broken.
