Google TV adds a porn channel

Published on November 8, 2011 by

Vivid Entertainment, a Los Angeles adult entertainment provider, has announced a Vivid app for Google TV. The Vivid app will stream sexually explicit content to Google TV set-top devices.

You certainly won’t find anything like this on Apple TV because Apple has taken a anti-porn stance for sometime now and that won’t change anytime soon.

Having porn will likely make little difference whether someone buys a Google TV vs an Apple TV. In fact there may be as many people who wouldn’t buy a Google TV because of porn as there are people who would by it because it has porn. Remember, there’s no shortage of porn on the Internet. And Android users have long had access to adult content.

One thing that is interesting about the Vivid app on Google TV is that the app is similar to a channel, which is perhaps the way most TV apps will behave in the future. Imagine an HBO app that would allow you to view movies for a monthly fee or apps like NBC or TNT that could be supported by ad revenue.

Former Apple executive Jean-Louis Gassée is also speculating that Apple could be planning on delivering channels as apps and hints that this may have been what Steve Jobs had in mind for Apple TV (without the porn of course.)
