Apple’s new iPad mini is already available for purchase and the company should have no problem selling tons of them this holiday season. The tablet has a 7.9-inch display that is designed to be held with one hand in the vertical position. The size of the iPad mini should make it the best option for an Apple TV remote of all the current iOS devices.
The iPad mini weighs only .68 pounds. That’s significantly lighter than the 1.44 pounds of the full-sized iPad. The iPhone and iPod touch are small and light, but their displays are too small for second screen apps. The iPad mini small and light enough to hold in your hands for a long period of time, but still large enough to be a good for second screen apps.
The iPad mini is a smaller version of the full-sized iPad without compromises. That means it includes features like, AirPlay Mirroring, Siri, front and back cameras and 10-hour battery life.
The iPad mini should have similar performance of the iPad 2, since they both have Apple’s A5 chip. The A5 chip should give the iPad mini the speed and capability to run the most demanding iOS games. There will also be plenty of apps available from day one. All of the 275,000 iPad apps will work on the iPad mini without the developers having to update the apps.
Ben Reitzes with Barclays recently shared in a research note that he believes TV remotes, not TVs themselves, will be the key to Apple’s next big thing.
“We believe the 7” screen on iPad mini could be used for traditional content consumption such as reading books or watching movies, but Apple may have bigger plans for this device over time,” the analyst notes. “We believe the big secret about Apple’s TV strategy is not the TV itself – it’s about selling the remotes.”
Apple didn’t mention Apple TV during the iPad mini event, but they may have just released the ideal Apple TV remote.
