How do I turn off my Apple TV?

You can’t completely off Apple TV unless you unplug it, but you can put it to sleep or in stand by mode. There is a few ways to accomplish this. First, by default Apple TV will go to sleep automatically after 1 hour of inactivity (this doesn’t include watching movies). This can be changed by going to Settings-> General-> Sleep After-> then choose, 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, never, etc.

You can manually put Apple TV to sleep using the on screen menu by going to Settings and scroll down to Sleep Now. However, the easiest way to put Apple TV in sleep mode is by using a short cut on the remote. Simply hold the Play/Pause button for 5 seconds. This will only work if you are on the main menu screen. If you want to quickly get to the main menu, hold the Menu button for 3 seconds.

This method can be used even if your TV is off or if it is on another source. Simply hold the Menu button for 3 seconds to ensure you are on the main menu, then hold the Play/Pause button for 5 seconds.

Note: If your Apple TV software is prior to iOS 5.1 you will hold the Select button for 5 seconds to turn if off instead of the Play/Pause button.
