Apple may prefer for you to purchase movies and TV shows using iTunes, but that doesn’t mean movies and TV shows downloaded elsewhere can’t be viewed in iTunes and on your Apple TV. Any compatible video content can be imported to iTunes on a computer and if Home Sharing is turen on, the movies and TV shows can be also be viewed Apple TV.

iTunes Compatible Video Content

Any QuickTime and MPEG-4 movie files that end in “.mov”, “.m4v”, or “.mp4” and are compatible with iTunes.

If you have existing movies or TV shows that are not in a compatible format, you can use HandBrake to convert them. HandBrake is an awesome video conversion tool and it’s completely Free. If you haven’t tried HandBrake, I highly recommend it. It’s simple to use and there’s even a preset to convert your video to an Apple TV format.

Import Movies and TV Shows to iTunes

There’s a couple of simple ways to get your compatible videos over to iTunes. I’m showing this using iTunes 10.7 on a Mac, but Windows is very similar.

1. Open iTunes.
2. Click on Movies on the left of the screen.
3. Drag your video content into the movie area.

Turn on Home Sharing on a computer

To view the Movies and TV shows on your Apple TV that you have stored on a computer, you need to turn on Home Sharing on both devices.

To turn on Home Sharing on your computer:

1. Open iTunes.
2. Go to Advanced and click Turn On Home Sharing.
3. Enter your Apple ID and password, then click Create Home Share. You should get a confirmation the Home Sharing is On.

Note: You can also select which photos to share by going to Advanced, then click on Choose Photos to Share and select where to share your photos from. You will also need to select Include Videos to view all of your videos in iTunes on Apple TV.

Turn on Home Sharing on Apple TV

1. On the Apple TV main menu, select Computer, then select Turn On Home Sharing.
2. Enter the same Apple ID and password you enter on your computer(s).

Now you should be able to view and listen to your iTunes content that is stored on your computer(s).

Note: All devices must be on the same Wifi network. Home Sharing will work if the computer is ON or asleep if “Wake for network access” is selected.

To use Home Sharing while a computer is sleeping: open System Preferences, go to Energy Saver and select enable “Wake for network access”.

Finding Movies

There’s plenty of places to download movies online legally, some are even free. PublicDomainFlicks.com offers hundreds of movies you probably never heard of for Free.

Note: The method in this article does not apply to renting movies and TV shows. However, most rented video content can be viewed on Apple TV using AirPlay.
